Life Expectancy on the Decline for White Americans
We’re up, we’re down, our world is changing by the minute… technology changes by the nanosecond. Can we keep up? Stress levels are on the rise and the results are out. Life expectancy is going down among white Americans, while blacks and hispanics have gained more than a year of life expectancy since 2008. Drug overdose, alcohol abuse and suicides are up among white Americans. The Washington Post: Studies are finding that the once steadily climbing life expectancy rates are taking a downturn.
“The increase in death in this segment of the population was great enough to affect life expectancy at birth for the whole group,” said Elizabeth Arias, the statistician at the National Center for Health Statistics who analyzed the data, referring to whites from their mid-20s to their mid-50s. “Despite the positive influences of declines in heart disease, cancer and stroke, increases in other causes like suicide, chronic liver disease and unintentional poisonings were so large that they had a negative effect on life expectancy,” she said. The effect is stark as we calculate that if the death rate among middle-aged whites had continued to decline at the rate it fell between 1979 and 1998, half a million deaths would have been avoided over the years from 1999 through 2013. That is about the same number of deaths as those caused by AIDS through 2015 – noted Dr. Deaton, 2015 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science, and Dr. Case, Princeton economic professor.
