Smiling woman of Oral Surgery Patient Information, Washington DCWhat is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon?

An oral and maxillofacial surgeon is a dentist with advanced surgical education which now requires at least four years of additional hospital training following completion of college and dental school. These credentials qualify the surgeon as a specialist in the diagnosis, surgical and adjunctive treatment of diseases, injuries, deformities, defects and cosmetic aspects of the mouth, face and jaws. The Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon has also received special training that prepares him or her to provide treatment to you using local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Once the doctor completes training, he or she is then qualified to take the rigorous written and oral examinations of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to attain certification.

Essentially, the oral and maxillofacial surgeon is a doctor who has specialized, extensive training in dentistry, medicine and surgery and limits his or her practice to the diagnosis, surgery and other treatments of the mouth, face and jaws.

About the Practice

Since 1977, the Washington Institute for Mouth, Face, and Jaw Surgery has been devoted to providing quality care for patients in Washington DC. Directed by Dr Steven A. Guttenberg, board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, the Institute also provides professional education for doctors and students who come from around the world to train and observe. Dr Guttenberg is also on the teaching staff at the Washington Hospital Center (a 900+ patient, tertiary care institution). In addition, the doctor works in conjunction with noted physicians and dentists from the entire Washington DC Metropolitan area.

The Office

The Washington Institute for Mouth, Face, and Jaw Surgery, conveniently located in the heart of the Washington DC business district, follows strict asepsis and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) guidelines. It is the first oral and maxillofacial office surgery to become a Medicare Certified Ambulatory Surgical Care Center in Washington DC.

In addition to the doctor, the Institute is staffed by a well trained and experienced contingent of surgical and anesthesia assistants and nurses, as well as by clerical and financial ancillaries.
